What does custom software cost in North Macedonia?
What drives the price of custom software, how to get a fixed quote and where the hidden costs are.
The short answer: it depends on scope. But “it depends” isn’t something you can budget with. Here is exactly what drives the price, how to lower it and what a good quote should contain.
What sets the price
- Number of processes. A warehouse is one process; warehouse, sales and production are three.
- Integrations. Every connection — accounting, e-invoicing, a bank, a fiscal device, a machine — needs work and testing.
- Users and roles. Who is allowed to see and change what.
- Data migration. Cleaning and importing from Excel or old software is often more work than it looks.
- Where it runs. On-premise, cloud or both, and whether it must work without internet.
- Mobile devices. Phones, tablets, scanners — and whether they must work offline.
Fixed price or hourly?
For business software we recommend a fixed price per phase. First we write a specification — exactly what the system will do — and price it. Anything outside the specification is agreed separately. That way both sides know where they stand.
How to lower the price
- Start with one process — the one that hurts most.
- Use hardware you already have.
- Clean up your data (codes, prices, customers) before starting.
- Name one person on your side who makes decisions.
The hidden costs of off-the-shelf software
Off-the-shelf software often has a lower starting price, but you pay per user, per module or a yearly subscription. With custom software the code is yours, and you only pay for maintenance if you want it.
What a quote should contain
- A description of every feature, not just headings.
- A split into phases, each with a deadline and price.
- What’s included: training, data migration, warranty.
- The maintenance price after launch.
- Who owns the code.
